Umay is the female spirit who guards birth, children and fertility. The name comes from an old root meaning womb. In the Orkhon inscriptions the khan's mother is named Umay tek ögüm katun — my mother the lady, like Umay.
Umay stands over the child and makes it smile in its sleep. When she leaves, the child sickens, and calling her back is the shaman's work.
In Balbal, Umay is one of the three Spirit tiles. The game's very last reward also carries her name: clearing the thirtieth floor unlocks the Umay tile theme. The oldest protector standing at the top of the climb is not an accident — the ascent counts as a birth too.
